Countries need key information on the distribution of invasive species to effectively manage the problem and to track and report on progress towards achieving targets for biological invasion, including Aichi Target 9 of the Convention of Biological Diversity’s Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. Country information is also essential for building a global understanding of biological invasion and how to best deal with it.
Country information on invasive species and biological invasion can be generated from a wide range of sources, including primary research, government and non-governmental organisations [1]. However some level of on-ground measurement of the problem is usually needed, as well as collation of information from a variety of sites or areas. Over time, repeat measurements are needed to track change in the size of the problem and the effectiveness of efforts to deal with it.
Here we outline an approach to building National Observation and Monitoring for Biological Invasions that is modular and flexible, and that enables all countries to contribute across a wide range of levels of baseline information. This approach uses three essential variables for monitoring invasion. The approach aims to harmonise observations on the threat and status of biological invasions across countries and to contribute to global biological invasion monitoring and reporting [2, 3].
